Retro, Roots, Soul
Velle (rhymes with Bell, and sounds like VehL) has a new powerful and unique sound that is imaginative with influences that span the last 75 years of contemporary popular music. Her music has been described as retro, roots and soul. A bold songstress from the Central Kootenay in British Columbia (Creston, BC), Velle has toured internationally with previous acts out of Victoria BC. She has performed all over Canada, the US and the UK (England and Ireland )as a support musician and background singer. When she started fronting her own band, fans of folk festivals took notice as she made an impact on the scene. She returned to the Kootenays to raise her family, where she ventured to start her first solo album and teach music. Despite all her work in the folk realm, her heart always wanted to write and perform soul music, her well-known folk producer Adrian Dolan was excited to begin, and thus, Velle went from teaching to being a full time Artist and Songwriter with the release of "The Right Time' on October 21st, 2016.
Black Press Quotes: The recent international phenomenon of the British chanteuse Adele is no fluke: in this oftentimes-confusing modern pop-culture maelstrom of electro-pop, gangsta rap, EDM, bro-country, and dirge-rock, the honest truth boils down to how most people want to be thrilled, entertained – and touched – by true soul, true sentiment, and true voices, uncluttered with auto-tuning and unsplattered with needless computerized trickery. Adele's lifetime career is set; stay tuned now for Velle Weitman.
Velle's debut album "The Right Time" is indeed a much-welcome shock to the ears, if only due to her inescapably muscular talent that hits the ears from the first note to the last note. Possessing a rich and powerful voice that pleasantly evokes yesteryear's divas of both R&B and jazz (oftentimes achieving a wonderful balancing point between Mae West, Aretha Franklin, Maria McKee, and Sheryl Crow, if you can dig it), Velle soars confidently from the baritone caverns to the falsetto stratosphere, which is no easy feat. And her voice is framed by the respectably accomplished chops of her backing band of West Kootenay Wunderkinds….
All in all, "The Right Time" stands as one of the best independent albums released by a British Columbia recording artist over the past decade, and a bright shining talent like Velle Weitman deserves far more than to remain enshadowed in the provincial back sticks. This writer hopes that Velle's future includes the welcome embrace of urban R&B/jazz scenes across the nation; we'll all be better for it.
Velle is a veteran performer and violin music teacher. Her demeanor conveys her desire and enthusiasm to be on the stage personally and with her students. Velle runs a combination Suzuki/RCM/Fiddle violin program called Velvet Strings and claims that it allowed her to keep "her chops" as she puts it, while raising her family and getting ready for her release. Velle has played in bands out of Victoria BC such as The Jeremy Walsh Band, Honeygirl, The Dragonflies, Barleywik, and jazz group, The Jackson Street Trio. She has shared the stage with such artists as Harry Manx, The Duhks, The Bills, Daniel Lapp and Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark and yes, even Biff Naked. Velle has also shared the stage many times with her siblings Daniel Huscroft ( recording artist and sideman for JJ Shiplett opening act for Johnny Reid and Natalie McMaster) and Zav Huscroft (RT), published composer with Frederick and Harris Music Co, and recording artist. She has taught at the Royal Conservatory in Victoria BC and privately on Vancouver Island and more recently Creston BC. She has taught several Fiddle Workshops on the Coast and runs an annual fiddle workshop locally.
She will be touring her album summer of 2017 at Music Festivals with her Kootenay Soul Band, complete with a horn section and back up singers. She captivates the audience with her unique voice – silky and velvety, raspy and sultry. With unbridled energy, she commands and transports the audience to the jazz clubs of New York and the back alleys of New Orleans. This exciting new groove feels like your favourite old jeans yet challenges the ears with its sonic depth, emotional sensitivity and arrangements by the amazingly talented producer Adrian Dolan. Backed by a eight piece show band, she showcases an eclectic mix of internationally recognized musicians. The live shows should not be missed. Velle also has a paired down group called the Velle Weitman Trio. Velle's debut album, The Right Time is available online at www.velle.ca
